Barcelona Superstar Lionel Messi won his first senior international trophy with his national team as Angel Di Maria’s goal gave Argentina a 1-0 win over hosts Brazil in the Copa America final.

Argentina’s win is the major title the national team will take after 28years. It has also ended Brazil’s unbeaten home record that stretched back more than 2,500 days.

The last time Argentina experienced success at a major tournament was in 1993 when the great Gabriel Batistuta’s brace gave them a 2-1 win over Mexico in the Copa final in Ecuador.

It was also the first time in six editions playing at home that Brazil had failed to lift the trophy.

Argentina’s winning goal at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro was scored in the 22nd minute by Angel Di Maria after Rodrigo De Paul made a long pass to him.

33-year-old Di Maria used the sloppy defending from left-back Renan Lodi to take control and lob it past goalkeeper Ederson.

The second half of the game was more exciting as Brazil piled on the pressure but despite having five strikers on the field, they could not get an equaliser against the Argentinian defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.

Argentina’s win was special for Barcelona striker Lionel Messi, who picked up his first-ever title in a blue and white shirt after more than 10 years of club and individual honours.
